An anti-friction material comprises 3-50% by weight of MgO particles (325-20 mesh) uniformly distributed throughout, and supported by a metallic matrix which includes Mo or a readily oxidizable compound of Mo (e.g. carbide nitride boride or silicide) and a metal or alloy to provide an oxide which lowers the sublimation rate of molybdenum oxide (e.g. iron copper, stainless steel or nickel).ALSO:An antifriction material comprises 3-50% by weight of MgO particles (325-10 mesh) uniformly distributed throughout, and supported by a metallic matrix which includes Mo1 or a readily oxidizable compound of Mo and a metal or alloy which provides an oxide which combines with molybdenum oxide to decrease the sublimation rate thereof. The latter metal or alloy may be selected from iron, copper, stainless steel, and nickel, and the readily oxidizable compound of Mo may be molybdenum carbide, nitride, boride or silicide. This material can be applied to a carbon steel or stainless steel backing member by a flame spraying technique using an acetylene flow rate of 1.1 m.3/hr., an oxygen flow rate of 0.9 m.3/hr. and a ratio of powder to acetylene of less than 900 gms. of powder 11.1 m.3 acetylene. The coated backing member is then used as one of the rubbing surfaces in a bearing particularly for use in rotary seals for gasturbine heat exchangers and high velocity rubbing seals in aircraft jet engines.ALSO:An antifriction material comprises 3-50% by weight of MgO particles (325-20 mesh) distributed throughout, and supported by, a metallic matrix which includes Mo or a readily oxidizable compound of Mo (e.g. carbide, boride, nitride or silicide) and a metal or alloy which provides an oxide which combines with molybdenum oxide to decrease the sublimation rate thereof (e.g. iron, copper, stainless steel or nickel).
