The invention comprises trans -9- oxodec -2- enoic acid and its salts, alkyl esters and amides specifically the methyl and isopropyl esters. In their preparation: a monoalkyl azelate acid halide R1O2C.(CH2)7COOX1 which may b obtained from azelaic acid via the half-ester is halogenated to give a 9-alkyl 2-haloazelate -1- acid halide R1O2C.(CH2)6CHX2.COX1 which is esterified and then dehydrohalogenated (e.g. with collidine) to give a 9-alkyl 1-alkyl trans-non -2- ene-dioate R1O2C.(CH2)5. CH=CH.CO2R which is partially hydrolysed to give 1-alkyl trans-non -2- enedioate HO2C.(CH2)5CH=CH. CO2R; this is converted to the acid halide X3OC.(CH2)5CH=CH.CO2R, which is reacted with a metal methyl, e.g. dimethyl cadmium and the resulting complex decomposed with water to give an alkyl trans -9- oxodec -2- enoate CH3.CO(CH2)5CH=CHCO2R which may be hydrolysed with acid to the free acid; R1 is alkyl, preferably CH3 or C2H5, R is preferably C1-4 alkyl, X1 and X3 are halogen, preferably chlorine, and X2 is halogen, preferably bromine. Intermediate compounds prepared are: methyl and ethyl azelate acid chlorides; methyl and ethyl 2-bromoazelate 1-acid chlorides; dimethyl, methyl isopropyl and ethyl isopropyl 2-bromazelates; dimethyl, methyl isopropyl and ethyl isopropyl trans-non -2- enedioates; 1-methyl and 1-isopropyl hydrogen trans-non -2- enedioates; 1-methyl and 1-isopropyl trans-non -2- enedioate 9-acid chlorides. The first Provisional Specification discloses a method of extracting trans -9- oxodec -2- enoic acid from queen bees and purifying it by solvent fractionation.ALSO:Low molecular weight polyethylene impregnated with trans -9- oxo-dec -2- enoic acid or a salt, alkyl ester or amide thereof is used to inhibit swarming in beehives.ALSO:A product for controlling the behaviour of honey bees in a hive comprises a coherent carrier, acceptable to the bees, coated with or containing trans-9-oxo-dec-2-enoic acid or a salt, alkyl ester or amide thereof. The coherent carrier may comprise paper or sugar candy placed across the mouth of a queen cage used to introduce a new queen or, to inhibit swarming, polyethylene, a wick in a reservoir containing a solution of the active material, a dead queen, wood or other material normally found in the hive. |
