Process and method for recovery of halogens

An apparatus for the recovery of a heavy halogen or pseudohalogens from a halide compound in solution includes an electrochemical cell. The electrochemical cell has an electrode assembly including at least a first and second electrodes in communication with a controller for providing a current to at least two of the electrodes. Upon delivery of a predetermined voltage, the halide compound is oxidised at one or more the electrodes to form a halogen corresponding to the halide in solution. The halogen is deposited on the one or more electrodes. Gradual production of the halogen takes place at a controlled voltage potential independent of current and close to the oxidation potential for the halide solution on an anode. The solution is maintained at a pH less than 6.
