Uranium and plutonium are separated from fission products in irradiated uranium oxide nuclear fuel by contacting the fuel with an oxygen-fluorine gas mixture at 350-500 DEG C., when uranium and plutonium are converted to volatile hexafluorides and fission products remain in the residue. The gas mixture may also contain nitrogen. Preferably the fuel is mixed with an inert granular material and the mixture fluidized with the gas. Suitable inert materials are calcium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, and dense granular alumina. Specification 845,655 is referred to.
|
