PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and an imaging method which actualize focusing even on a low contrast object, an object under dark conditions, or such an object including noise. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus is equipped with: an automatic focus detecting means for detecting the contrast of a selected area including an object image thereby detecting a focal point, from image data obtained by receiving light from an object and from the circumference of the object after passing through a photographic lens; and a photometric means for dividing the object image into a plurality of photometric areas and obtaining the evaluation values of the respective divided photometric areas thereby performing photometry. In the imaging apparatus, object area setting means SW8, SW10 and SW12 for setting the size of an object area are provided and when a macro photographing mode is selected, the automatic focus detecting means make a comparison between, out of the evaluation values of the respective photometric areas obtained by the photometric means, the evaluation value of the selected area including the object and the evaluation value of the photometric area on the circumference of the object, and the size of an area for obtaining an AF evaluation value can be consequently made variable.
