PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device attaining space saving and high input efficiency. SOLUTION: The character input device is provided with: first to fifth key input detection parts; first, second, third and fourth control parts for making detected inputs of the first, second, third and fourth input detection parts correspond to selections of first, second, third and fourth rows among Japanese syllabary, respectively; and fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth control parts for making the detected inputs of the fifth, first, second, third and fourth key input detecting parts following the detected input of the fifth key input detecting part correspond to selections of fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth rows different from the rows of the first to fourth rows among the Japanese syllabary, respectively. Alternatively, the character input device is provided with: the first key input detection part; and a first row correspond control part for making the detected input correspond to selection of respective rows of Japanese syllabary dependently on the number of continuing times of detected inputs of the first key input detection part.
