Monitoring thread wound on a bobbin in a sewing machine comprises marking the bobbin with status-defining colors, optically detecting a change in status as the bobbin rotates and analyzing the change with a logic circuit. An independent claim is also included for equipment for monitoring bobbin-wound thread in a sewing machine as above, comprising a color marking system, an optical detector and a logic circuit.
