PURPOSE:To improve perpendicular orientational property and to greatly improves S/N and recording characteristics by providing a carbon-contg. boundary face layer between a thin cobalt-chromium alloy film and substrate. CONSTITUTION:After the surface of the substrate 1 is cleaned, the carbon-contg. film 3 is formed to 1-100Angstrom thickness by a vapor deposition method, sputtering method,etc., thereon, and the thin cobalt-chromium alloy film 1 is formed by a sputtering method, etc., thereon. The crystal growth of the thin film takes place from an initial stage if the carbon-contg. boundary face layer is provided to the substrate in such a manner and, therefore, the layer having the insufficient perpendicular orientational property is decreased and the excellent crystal orientational property is attained as compared to the medium formed by cleaning the substrate surface by an org. solvent, vacuum heating, acid treatment, etc. The S/N and recording characteristics are thereby greatly improved.
