<p>Method, involves detection and determination of residual gas partial pressure of residual gas in a combustion chamber (8). Air partial pressure is determined at the time of closing the exhaust valve (10) of air as a function of the residual gas partial pressure, in the combustion chamber. Air mass is determined in the combustion chamber at the time, in which the intake valve (9) closes, as a function of the air partial pressure.
