<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing fog from becoming worse, by restraining a fog level change even if a long job, and to provide a fog control method. <P>SOLUTION: During a job, detection patterns are formed in series between pages having toner images held on a toner image carrier, by altering the value of fog control parameter. The fog level of each of the detection patterns formed in series is detected. Based upon the fog level of each of the detection patterns detected in series and the target fog level, a target fog control parameter value is calculated.
