To break down wood materials by ripping, e.g. tree trunks and the like, it is fed by a conveyor (1) between preliminary ripping rotors (2,3) and then carried directly to a main rotor (4). The material is fed to the preliminary rotors at a slower speed than their peripheral speeds and it is thrown to the main rotor at a slower speed than its rotary speed. A mantle (8) shrouds the under side of the lower preliminary rotor.
