The method involves storing an image data in a two dimensional (2D) texture region. The texture region is evenly divided into independent regions or surfaces. A set of surface histograms is parallely calculated in a graphical processing unit (GPU), where one surface histogram is calculated for each divided region or surface. The surface histograms are parallely added into the GPU, so as to derive a final image histogram. The set of surface histograms is calculated by counting intensities in a texel, which is determined by texel-texture coordinates and a size of the image data. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system for calculating histogram by an application of a graphical processing unit (2) a computer program product containing a medium with a computer program logic that executes program codes for calculating histogram by an application of a graphical processing unit.
