The method involves implementing state transitions of a finite state machine, when a backwardly directed request is carried out. The request is derived based on a target state, which should fulfill requirements with respect to input signals and/or previous states, to attain in the respective target state. A processing of internal intermediate signals is omitted. A hardware description language (HDL) code is generated and mapped on memory cells, such that the input signals and their combinations are mapped on addresses of the cells. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a code generator for generating hardware description language (HDL) codes for implementation in hardware such as programmable logic, based on a graphical representation for coding a state machine (2) a computer program product with software code sections to execute a method of generating a hardware description language (HDL) code, when the product is executed on a computer.
