The method involves injecting a fuel into a combustion chamber (29) using a fuel injection unit (25), during a compression block of an internal combustion engine. The fuel is injected in such a manner that the fuel forms a mixture region (28) of fuel and air on a piston (21). A preset time span is temporized between an end of the fuel injection and a beginning of an ignition, until an electrode (27) of a spark plug (26) is immersed into the mixture region. An ignition is carried out within the mixture region. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine for direct injection of petrol.
