A first transmission mechanism (11) is used to transmit movement of the overrun shaft (12) to a control device (13) which is connected to a pressurized fluid source (15, 18a-18c) and to a pneumatic drive (21) operated by this device. The pneumatic drive engages with a second transmission mechanism for activating the wheel brake system. The second mechanism can be controlled independently of the overrun shaft operation. The control device comprises a variable reducing valve. The second mechanism comprises a parallel plate guide (23) which is connected to the brakes via brake cables (25) and is freely movable relative to the shaft. The guide is pivotally and eccentrically connected to an axle (24) which is rotated by the pneumatic drive. The overrun shaft acts upon the wheel brakes and is connected to the hitch on the towing vehicle.
