A portable terminal having a touch pad and a scrolling method for lists of the portable terminal are provided to quickly perform the scrolling of lists by enabling the list scrolling according to a preset direction regardless of input direction for scrolling. A portable terminal having a touch pad includes an input module(110), a direction determining module(120), a controller(140), and a display module(150). The input module(110) detects a sweep event used to perform a scrolling operation for lists. The direction determining module(120) determines a scroll direction as the first direction if the sweep event for the first direction is detected. The controller(140) generates a control signal used to perform a scrolling operation in the determined scrolling direction if sweep events of the first direction and the second direction, which is a reverse direction of the first direction, are continuously detected. The display module(150) displays list items in response to the control signal generated from the controller.
