In a wireless communication network having an access point and a wireless client which transitions between "active" and "sleep" modes, there is an arrangement using packet probing techniques to remotely determine wireless client and access point configurations. Examples of such configurations include the times when the client device wakes up to receive beacons from the wireless access point, intervals between successive beacons and a time out interval for staying in active mode. The probing techniques include sending packets to the client device, over the wireless LAN, at intervals calculated using data publicly available on the wireless LAN technology in use and results of previous packet probing measurements. Wireless traffic for the client is scheduled using the determined configuration parameters. |
