The aim of the invention is to be able to calculate the current distance between the nearest point and the distance measuring device, when the point P is no longer inside the detection region of the distance measuring device. According to the invention, the calculation of the projected distance is based on information about the relative movement of the distance measuring device and the obstacle, and on a defined limiting distance.
