Collission avoidance method and system

A system for warning personnel of the presence of mobile equipment such as vehicle is disclosed. A first transmitter is mounted on the vehicle and transmits a warning signal having a characteristic which varies with the speed of the vehicle. Individual personnel are provided with receivers which can receive the warning signal from the first transmitter when the vehicle approaches, and provide an output signal to which an indicator is responsible to warn the personnel of the proximity of the vehicle. Optionally, the personnel are provided with a transmitter enabling them to transmit response signals to a receiver on the vehicle when they receive a warning signal. The response signal alerts the operator of the vehicle to the presence of the personnel. An emergency stop signal can be transmitted by the personnel, if necessary, bringing the vehicle to a halt in an emergency situation. The system avoids the generation of unnecessary alarms in the vehicle, as in most cases personnel can move out of the way of the approaching vehicle. This avoids operator fatigue and helps to maintain the effectiveness of the system.
