The piston ring has a slide surface (10) formed on a ring edge zone (11,12). The edge zone has a worked modification (5) acting with a sensor to generate ring wear information. The modification is located in an edge section of the edge zone on the upper and/or lower edge (15a,b) of the slide surface, with the width of the edge section being less than 20% of the width of the slide surface. The modification is formed by a groove with a reference surface and a flank at right angles to it. The modification acts with a sensor (4) to generate a signal (45), which is supplied to an electronic evaluator to determine the wear on the piston ring. |
