The system has a transmitter (4) with an encoding unit (20) that generates bit streams encoding high-dynamics images, where the transmitter transmits the streams towards standard and high dynamic image receivers (10, 12). The unit (20) generates a standard bit stream encoding images, where luminance of each pixel of each image is encoded with a standard dynamics. The encoding unit generates another bit stream containing data required for reconstructing the luminance of the images from the luminance encoded with the standard dynamics. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an encoding unit to generate bit streams encoding high dynamics images (2) a decoding unit to decode the high dynamics images (3) a high dynamics image encoding method (4) a high dynamics image decoding method (5) a high dynamics image transmitting signal.
