<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator, wherein a long lifetime, power saving, reductions in size and weight and improved contrast are attained by using a plurality of semiconductor light emitting elements including a white semiconductor light emitting element, and to provide an projection type image display apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminator uses a plurality of semiconductor light emitting elements 1 as a light source. The plurality of semiconductor light emitting elements 1 include red, green, glue and white semiconductor light emitting elements 1. Since the semiconductor light emitting elements 1 are used as the illuminating light source, its power consumption is reduced, lifetime is prolonged and heat generation is decreased. Further, since the white semiconductor light emitting element is added, white luminance and hence contrast can be improved. In addition, low power consumption makes it possible to use a small power source and eliminate the need for a color wheel for color display.
