PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an active material in which Li can be contented easily and uniformly, and to provide a battery using the active material manufactured thereby. SOLUTION: A negative electrode active material layer 12B contains a first element capable of forming an alloy with Li, a second element capable of forming an alloy with the first element, and the active material composed by melting a source material containing Li and solidifying. Si, Sn or the like is preferable for the first element, and Co, Fe, Cu, Ni or the like is preferable for the second element. A proportion of the first element and the second element is preferably in a range of 99:1 to 50:50 in an atomic ratio of the first element to the second element and a proportion of a total of the first element and the second element, and Li is preferably in a range of 99:1 to 50:50 in an atomic ratio of a total of the first element and the second element to Li.
