PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a travel inspection method and an apparatus enabling the high-speed processing of enclosed mail to solve the problem that a mail industry dealing with enclosed mail including such important mail as cash cards and mail bearing personal information needs to inspect mail to find out defective mail but has relies on manual work and a visual check. SOLUTION: The inspection apparatus has a travel engaging mechanism which has suction pads at both front and back face sides of mail on transfer, the front side suction pad having a suction force greater than that of the back side suction pad, and causes suction pads at both sides to operate in separation in the direction of the thickness of the mail while sucking the mail from both its faces, and a sensor which detects the release of the mail from the back side suction pads becoming incapable of continuous sucking. The inspection apparatus discriminates a normal product from a defective product with reference to a position sensor of the travel engaging mechanism. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
