A die 1 for punching a hole in a moving card 2 in selective punching, by relative reciprocatory movement between the die and a matrix 3, has a punching surface 11 for punching half of the hole during one stroke of the reciprocatory movement and a punching surface 111 on a recess 4 for punching the remainder of the hole during the other stroke of the reciprocatory movement. The waste material removed by the punching surface 111 is sucked or blown away through a duct 7 in guide 8. The die may be reciprocated by a crank mechanism; alternatively, the die may be reciprocated relative to a stationary die.
