In the production of automotive steel slip bearings or bearing shells by a thermal sputtering process, the surface is pre-conditioned with a high speed water jet, or a high-speed water jet bearing abrasive particles. The conditioning process continues until the resulting surface cavities reach a depth of 80 m or more. The subsequent thermal sputtering is e.g. thermal spraying, arc-rod sputtering, atmospheric plasma spraying or high-speed flame spraying. Conditioning continues until the cavities cover 15% of the surface. The water pressure is 3000-4000 bar and transports abrasive particles of size in the range 100-10008 mu m and having an aspect ratio of more than 2. The particles are hard cast particles, steel grit, steel splinters, SiC and/or WC-slivers. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a commensurate slip bearing; and (ii) a bearing shell of steel alloy on a con-rod, steel or aluminum crankcase. |
