Method involves electrical high voltage (6) at an ignition coil. The control voltage is pulsed in such a way that the pulses arrive in a resonance area (10) of the ignition coil. The resonance area covers the natural frequency (8) of the ignition coil and a deviation from plus or minus 20 percent, preferably plus minus 10 percent, above all plus minus 5 percent around natural frequency of the ignition coil. An independent claim is also included for the igniter.
