PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effective partial surface modification method securing seizure resistance even under a short oil supply condition, and having a merit in cost. SOLUTION: A sliding member is provided with a chemical compound layer having nodular graphite cast iron or malleable cast iron of 50% or more area ratio of pearlite and 5-30% area ratio of nodular graphite as matrix and having thickness of 1/2 or less of average particle diameter of nodular graphite by sulphonitriding treatment. Consequently, since lubrication action by nodular graphite projecting out of chemical compound layer and lubricating oil impregnated in a porous layer by sulphonitriding treatment, high seizure resistance is provided even in a transient operation during which oil supply tends to be short.
