PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method of a reverse osmosis membrane separator (an RO device) which enables a long-term stable operation by preventing the clogging of membrane surfaces in a Christmas tree-structured RO device, particularly a Christmas tree type multistage RO device using ultra-low pressure RO membranes. SOLUTION: In the operation method of an RO device having a plurality of banks each in which a plurality of RO vessels housing RO elements are arranged parallel to water supply (one RO vessel may be sufficient at the final stage), and using concentrated water discharged from a preceding stage bank as supply water to a subsequent stage bank, the operation is carried out so that the amounts of permeating water of the RO elements are made almost equal, and that a ratio of the amount of permeating water per one RO element in each RO vessel to the amount of concentrated water per vessel is≤0.4.
