PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating agent by using a sugar and a silicic acid alkali metal salt and without forming gel even at a high temperature by preventing the silicic acid alkali metal salt which is stable in an alkaline side, from gelling, as would be otherwise caused by a fact that carboxyl groups are generated in a large amount by the reaction of the sugar having reductive terminal groups on heating to a high temperature, and the pH of the coating liquid is lowered from an alkaline to neutral side. SOLUTION: This coating agent for the paper is provided by using at least 1 kind of a compound selected from a compound obtained by reducing the sugar having the reductive terminal groups, a compound obtained by oxidizing the sugar and then neutralizing, and a cyclic sugar without having the reductive terminal group, and having 2-15 mean degree of polymerization, instead of the sugar used jointly with the silicic acid alkali metal salt so as not to produce carboxyl groups formed by the reaction of the sugar having reductive terminal groups.
