PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detector capable of shortening an origin restoration time by simple detector constitution, a scale, and a method for the restoration to an origin in the position detector. SOLUTION: This position detector 1, provided with the scale 11 having an origin pattern using the plurality of origins as indexes, and a neighboring point pattern using a plurality of neighboring points corresponding to the respective origins, as indexes, and for restoring a needle 13 to the target origin, based on an output from an encoder head 12, has the first moving means for moving the needle 13 in an optional position until detecting any one of the neighboring points, and the second moving means for moving it from the detected neighboring point to the corresponding origin, specifies the target origin, based on a collation result of a pulse number corresponding to a moving distance of the needle by the second moving means, with an interval pulse number stored in an interval pulse number storage means 22, and an inter-origin pulse number of the target origin is registered for absolute position regulation, referring to the inter-origin pulse number from a mechanical origin stored in an inter-origin pulse number storage means 23.
