PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method and a device for descaling a metal wire rod by which an oxide film or the like on the surface of a stretched metal wire rod is securely removed. SOLUTION: A metal wire rod such as a steel wire 7 or the like is passed in a liquid in which a cleaning and polishing agent is beforehand added and a jet of high-pressured liquid is emitted to the surface of the steel wire 7 in the liquid. The cleaning and polishing agent is spherical zirconia beads such as zircon with a particle size of about 10μm-800μm. The steel wire 7 passes through the liquid in which the cleaning and polishing agent is dispersed, and the jet of high-pressured liquid is emitted to the surface of the steel wire 7, thereby, scales on the surface of the steel wire 7 are removed by the cleaning and polishing agent.
