PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner with enhanced usability which a user can reliably and safely use while keeping the performance and precision of the high performance dust detecting means over a long period of time. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner has the dust detecting means 13 capable of detecting whether or not dust passes through an air flow channel due to the light quantity change by the light receiving means Q1 changing the dust sucked by the suction force passing and blocking the light between the optical axes of the light emitting means LED 1 and the light receiving means Q1; a control means 10 controls the supplying electric power to the motorized blower 4 according to the dust detecting information signal from the dust detecting means 13, and the dust detecting means 13 has a compensating circuit 14 changing the light emitting quantity of the light emitting means LED 1 such that the light receiving quantity of the light receiving means Q1 becomes a predetermined quantity and a compensating means comprising a pulse number compensating means 11, so that the same dust detecting sensitivity as that in an initial condition before dust sticks to a lens by the control means 10 can be kept and continued to enhance the usability.
