PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal compound having stability to heat, light and the like, low viscosity, proper refractive index anisotropy, proper dielectric anisotropy, and steep electro-optic characteristics, wide nematic temperature range and good compatibility with another liquid crystalline compound, and especially, a liquid crystalline compound having wide nematic temperature range. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by formula (1), [wherein R<SP>1</SP>represents hydrogen, alkyl or alkenyl; ring A<SP>1</SP>represents optionally halogen-substituted 1,4-phenylene; ring A<SP>2</SP>and ring A<SP>3</SP>each represents optionally halogen-substituted, for example, 1,4-phenylene; Z<SP>1</SP>, Z<SP>2</SP>and Z<SP>3</SP>each represents, for example, a single bond or -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-; L<SP>1</SP>and L<SP>2</SP>each represents hydrogen or fluorine; X<SP>1</SP>represents hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, or a group represented by -C≡N, -N=C=S, -SF<SB>5</SB>, or -Q-W wherein Q represents a single bond, oxygen or sulfur; W represents alkyl in which at least one hydrogen is substituted with halogen; n and m are each 0 or 1; and p is an integer of from 1 to 4].
