<p>An internal combustion engine having a cylinder with a combustion chamber and with an exhaust flow path capable of discharging gas from the combustion chamber; at least one valve body provided at the cylinder and capable of being positioned at an open state in which the combustion chamber and the exhaust flow path are communicated with each other and a close state in which the combustion chamber and the exhaust flow path are shut off from each other; and a piston reciprocating in the combustion chamber, wherein the operation cycle of the engine is switchable between a two-cycle operation in which the piston reciprocates once and a four-cycle operation in which, in addition to the two-cycle operation, the piston reciprocates one more time with the valve body closed. The engine further has detection means for detecting the degree of throttle opening or information relating to it and also has control means for controlling an open/close timing at which the valve body is in the open state or the close state. The control means controls the open/close timing based on the information obtained by the detection means, thereby switching over the operation cycle.</p> |
