<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retort sterilizing method of a paper container which is capable of efficiently performing sterilization in a short time, and less degraded in appearance even after the sterilization. <P>SOLUTION: The steam type retort sterilization comprises (1) a deaeration step, (2) a heating step by pressurized steam, and (3) an air cooling step, the (3) air cooling step, in which water is introduced to the water level not in direct contact with a retort article while being pressurized with compressed air by keeping the internal pressure the same as or higher than that in the heating step, steam is discharged while introducing air, and the atmospheric temperature is dropped to ≤70°C.
