PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink tank for supplying ink to an ink jet printer in which residual quantity of ink in a used ink tank can be brought to substantially "0" without using a porous body as an ink holder and without providing an atmospheric air inlet, and to provide an ink cartridge using that ink tank. SOLUTION: The ink tank 10 comprises an ink containing section 16, a negative pressure generating section 12 and a section 13 for supplying ink to the printer. The negative pressure generating section 12 communicates with the ink containing section 16 and the ink supply section 13 through passages 18 (not shown) of minute cross-section. The ink containing section 16 has such a structure as the opposite sidewalls of the outer circumferential frame 11 of the ink tank 10 composed of a rigid material are enclosed by extremely thin flexible films 23 and 24. One of the extremely thin flexible films 23 and 24 is bonded integrally to the sidewall of the negative pressure generating section 12 to constitute the passage 18 between the negative pressure generating section 12 and the ink containing section 16.
