A method and apparatus for detecting a target substance in a monitored environment involves, in a training phase, training at least one animal capable of detecting the target substance to execute a particular avoidance action, immediately upon detecting said target substance, in order to avoid particular aversive stimulus; and in an operational phase, exposing the trained animal to a specimen (e.g., air) from the monitored environment or object, and sensing when the animal has executed the particular avoidance action. |
