PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pearlescent pigment having both an entirely uniform brilliance and a high-grade silky feeling and fully satisfying desired design properties. SOLUTION: The pearlescent pigment is one comprising a flaky substrate formed by a hydrothermal method and a coating layer comprising at least one metal oxide and formed on the surface of the substrate, wherein the metal oxide has a particle diameter in the range of 1 to 500 nm.
