An hydraulic jet - propulsion apparatus in which an enginedriven pump in a casing 13 mounted internally or externally of a vessel 11 draws in water through an intake duct 15 and expels it from a discharge duct 17 as a jet to propel the vessel, a steering duct 24 is mounted for movement with respect to the discharge duct about a steering-hinge axis 23 to effect angular adjustment of the jet to steer the vessel and a reversing deflector 30 pivotally mounted on the steering duct at 29 is movable from an inoperative position (in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and full lines in Fig. 2) in which it has no effect upon the jet issuing from the steering duct to an operative position (full lines in Fig. 1 and dotted lines in Fig. 2) in which it re-directs the jet to issue forwardly (via the vanes 35 of an assembly 34 fitted in an aperture 33 in the lower wall of the steering duct) to produce reverse operation of the vessel, includes a linkage for operating the reversing deflector comprising a control member 39 and a link member 42 connected at one end to the control member through a first universal joint 41a and at its other end to the reversing deflector through a second universal joint 44a, the linkage being arranged so that when the reversing deflector 30 is in its inoperative position the second universal joint 44a lies on the steering-hinge axis 23 and when the reversing deflector is in its operative position the first universal joint 41a lies on the axis 23.
