The method involves comparing input data with data objects that are stored in a database (4). The data objects are selected from the database or the data objects are outputted to a user through an output unit (5) for verification. The input data are modified by mutation, and the data objects are outputted in case of existence of the mutant data set in the database. A mutation cost is determined in each case during modification of the input data by mutation. The mutation terminates when reaching or exceeding a preset threshold of the mutation cost. An independent claim is also included for a device such as a navigation system with an input unit for inputting a data.
