The monitoring device includes a chain for measuring homopolar voltage (TVo,FVo,CVo), a chain for measuring homopolar current (TIo,FVo,CVo), and a digital processing circuit (1) whose function is to search for and indicate the presence of a homopolar fault. The processing circuit determines the fundamental parts of the homopolar current (Io) and homopolar voltage (Vo) so as to calculate the phase shift (0) between the two parts and the value of cos (0).
