The system has an exhaust silencer (2) and an inlet exhaust pipe (4) that leads into the silencer. An outlet exhaust pipe (5) has an exhaust flap (7) for adjusting an exhaust gas flow, and leads outwards from the silencer. The exhaust flap is connected with a control device (9) for adjusting the flap in an opened condition when the speed of an internal combustion is low. The inlet exhaust pipe is connected with the outlet exhaust pipe. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating an exhaust system for an internal combustion engine.
