PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recording apparatus capable of reducing an amount of ink mist generated during a flushing operation and preventing accumulation caused by solidification of specific ink by the flushing operation. SOLUTION: The ink jet recording apparatus is configured so that a first flushing mode performed as it remains capped and a second flushing mode performed with a capping means open are selectively executed, and a flushing operation in which an amount of ink droplets discharged is large is controlled to be executed in the first flushing mode. In addition, the ink jet recording apparatus comprises a flushing amount counter for accumulating and counting a number of ink droplets discharged by flushing, and when a value counted by this counter reached a predetermined value, an idle suction operation for sucking and discharging a part of ink from an ink absorber is executed.
