A gas-phase process for producing carbon fibers through the pyrolysis of organic carbon compounds. The process for producing carbon fiber structures is characterized in that at least in a desired pyrolysis temperature range in a reaction furnace, at least two organic carbon compounds are caused to be present as carbon sources and the partial gas pressures of these organic carbon compounds are regulated so that these compounds can be decomposed at respective different decomposition temperatures and/or that a gas flow introduced into the reaction furnace is caused to form a turbulent flow, whereby carbon fiber structures in a three-dimensional network form are produced. Thus, carbon fiber structures each having a three-dimensional network form constituted of fine carbon fibers can be efficiently produced. The carbon fiber structures are utilizable as an additive suitable for use in improving physical properties, such as electrical properties, mechanical properties, and thermal properties, of solid materials, e.g., resins, ceramics, and metals, or as an additive suitable for use in improving physical properties, such as electrical properties and thermal properties, of liquids, e.g., fuels and lubricants.
|
