<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce effects of components affecting the measurement of the number of microorganisms even when the components are contained in a specimen. <P>SOLUTION: A nutrient component of a liquid culture medium 2 and oxygen are permeated through a semipermeable membrane 3 into a specimen liquid 1 to interfere the permeation of polyphenols or sulfur compounds in the specimen liquid 1. An output current (measurable quantity) varying according to metabolism of the microorganisms is measured on the side of the liquid culture medium 2. Thereby, the number of the microorganisms contained in the specimen liquid 1 is determined.
