<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent degradation of luminance image sticking while preventing variation in discharge intensity of each display cell. <P>SOLUTION: Sustain pulses are applied across row electrodes constituting a pair row electrodes of a plasma display panel only by a frequency predetermined for each of two or more sub-fields in a sustain period, and a length of a rising period of the sustain pulse is changed according to a cumulative luminescence time or a cumulative operating time.
