<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately decide a defocus at high speed. <P>SOLUTION: A difference in a luminance value between a comparison pixel and a notice pixel apart by a prescribed reference distance in image data is acquired. A small block having a maximum vale of the difference exceeding a prescribed threshold value is set as an edge block, and a small block having the difference not exceeding the threshold value is set as a non-edge block. A plurality of small blocks belong to a large block, and a component ratio of the edge block in each the large block is calculated. It is decided that it is not the defocus when the component ratio exceeds the prescribed reference value, and it is decided that it is the defocus when the component ratio does not exceed the reference value.
