PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a valve means of a fuel injector from damage or blockage by particulate material originating internally of the fuel injector. SOLUTION: The fuel injector has a filter 30 provided within a tip portion 12 of an injector body 10, downstream of a fuel inlet port 24 and upstream of a spray aperture 14. The filter 30 is in the form of a hollow truncated cone with a base region having an outer diameter dimensioned to be a press fit against inner sides of the tip portion 12 such that the filter is a press fit within the tip portion. A top or upper region of the cone terminates in an aperture through which a pintle 16 passes, and the aperture has an inner diameter dimensioned to be a close sliding fit over the pintle 16.
