PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a friction material capable of reducing maintenance man-hours, capable of reducing forming failure, and capable of effectively thermoforming the friction material. SOLUTION: This method includes a preform process for forming a preform in a predetermined shape by charging a raw material of the friction material used for a brake into a preform molding die, a process for adhering a powder release agent to a friction surface and a side surface of the preform, and a process for thermoforming (pressure heating) the preform to which the powder release agent is adhered and a pressure plate. Reduction of material loss and maintenance of molding die cleaning (reduction of the frequency of cleaning of the molding die) can be achieved by not adhering the powder release agent to other than required portions, and lowering of a temperature of the molding die can be prevented by using the powder, and reduction of forming failure and improvement of productivity can be achieved.
